Multiple people confirmed dead after Kentucky flooding

(WKYT/Gray News) - Multiple people were confirmed dead after flooding in central Kentucky.

Madison County Coroner Jimmy Cornelison confirmed three flooding-related deaths in Madison County. Two of the deaths were on University Drive in Richmond. One death was on Tates Creek Road in Richmond. The dead were two adult men and one adult woman.

Governor Beshear reported a flood-related death in Jackson County. Jackson County Judge-Executive Paul Hays told WKYT that a deadly vehicle accident happened on Kentucky 290 about four miles away from McKee, but he could not confirm if the death was flood-related.

In a social media video, Gov. Beshear said more deaths in Madison County and Jackson County may be confirmed. He has also declared a State of Emergency.

Richmond police said flooding was reported in the area of Catalpa Loop. The department is urging drivers to stay away from standing or rushing water.

Officers also said floodwaters continue to rise across the city, and first responders are busy with flooded roads, businesses and homes across Madison County. Police are asking residents to prepare for what to do and where to go in case of flooding.

Trooper Justin Kearney with Kentucky State Police said the city of Richmond is seeing high water across the roads as rain continues to fall. Trooper Kearney reminds drivers to not attempt to drive through high water because they do not know how deep it is.

Flooding was also reported in Mercer County. Donna Slack sent in videos from Mackville Road and Deep Creek Road showing high water.

Garrard County Emergency Management officials reported Saturday morning that multiple transformers blew in the north end of the county and that several roads are flooded.

The update was posted by Garrard County Emergency Management on Facebook.
